Motlow State softball team headed to Gulf Shores as 2019 season opens
After opening the 2019 softball season in Georgia last weekend, the Motlow Lady Bucks will swing into full action with five scheduled contests next week in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The Lady Bucks (0-2, 0-0) opened the season with a pair of losses to Georgia Highlands in Rome, GA, on Feb. 2. Motlow dropped the opener 5-3 and the nightcap 6-1. The Lady Bucks will face Shelton State, Coastal Alabama North, Jones College, Georgia Highlands and Coastal Alabama South in Gulf Shores Feb. 15 & 16. Motlow’s first home game is Feb. 19, when Calhoun visits for a 1pm doubleheader.
Motlow could never get a sustained offensive rally going against Georgia Highlands. In the first game the Lady Bucks managed only seven hits, including solo home runs from Samantha King and Lauren Tomberlin. Madison Hopkins and King each had two hits, and Hopkins picked up an RBI.
Jennifer Corbitt (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Motlow, tossing three innings and allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs. Autumn Davis pitched two innings and allowed one run, while King pitched a perfect final inning.
In game two, Georgia Highlands jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and the Lady Bucks were once again unable to generate an offensive rally, despite banging out eight hits. Tomberlin was 3-3 and Morgan Smith had a pair of hits. Heidi Durham started in the circle and took the loss, despite allowing only one earned run. King pitched the final three innings and gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
The Lady Bucks have trips to Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Booneville, Mississippi; and Memphis after they host Calhoun. The second home date will also be the opening of TCCAA conference action when defending conference champion Chattanooga State visits Mar. 8 & 9.
