Motlow to offer more classes in Sparta and at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Academy

Motlow receives approval to offer 100 percent of degree programs at two additional locations

Motlow State Community College recently received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to offer 100 percent of degree programs taught at the Motlow Sparta site and the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Academy.

The College previously offered up to 49 percent of programs at each site. This 100 percent approval will benefit students attending Motlow at the two locations, especially high school and non-traditional students, and is consistent with the mission and strategic goals of the College.

“Receiving the SACSCOC approvals to offer 100 percent of a program at these two locations represents Motlow State Community College’s continued commitment to serving the students in our communities,” said Melody Edmonds, interim vice president of academic affairs. “Motlow recognized the need to expand the locations where classes are being offered, and SACSCOC agreed that Motlow College is capable of meeting that need with the same level of quality instruction and student outcomes as any other location.”

Area high school students in the Sparta site service area will benefit, as the approval will allow more students to take advantage of dual enrollment courses offered there. The target audiences for the courses offered at the Sparta site include high school and non-traditional students preparing for a two-year or four-year degree, and high school and non-traditional students preparing to enter the workforce by taking career-oriented courses.

“The success of the Sparta site has been, in large part, due to the increased participation in dual enrollment at White County High School, which has been looking for increased early post-secondary opportunities for its students,” said Beth Ann Swallows, Motlow Sparta site coordinator. “This (SACSCOC) approval means more possibilities for them and for the non-traditional students who are now taking advantage of TN Reconnect. We're excited for the future, and I know that those in the community who have been with Motlow Sparta from the beginning will be thrilled to see the location grow.”

The approval for the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Academy will provide a more centrally located facility within the College’s service area, and will contribute to filling the need for skilled emergency medical services in the community. The target audiences for the programs at this site are students preparing to enter the workforce, current providers seeking elevation in licensure, and non-traditional students seeking employment opportunities.

“The Tennessee Fire and Codes Academy is a great location to better serve our entire service area, while having the space to provide realistic simulation,” said Drew Hooker, Motlow EMS director. “We appreciate the opportunity to use the TFACA location, and the Department of Commerce and Insurance’s support of our college and program. This is just another example of the Fire Service and EMS working together to better train the next generation of emergency professionals. The SACSCOC approval allows us to conduct classroom training and field training in the same location, providing a more comprehensive educational environment.”
