Lewis double-double leads Motlow to season opening win over East Georgia State
Sophomore Janna Lewis scored 17 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to lead the Motlow Lady Bucks women’s basketball team to a 68-49 win over East Georgia State to open the 2018-19 season Thursday afternoon in Marianna, Florida.
Motlow (1-1) followed the win with a 100-76 loss to the host school, Chipola, ranked seventh in the nation in the NJCAA preseason poll, Saturday in Florida. The Lady Bucks will play their first home game Thursday, with Central Georgia Tech visiting Copperweld Arena for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
A fast start propelled Motlow to its win over East Georgia after jumping out to a 17-3 lead after the first quarter. The two teams played evenly in the second and third quarter, with Motlow winning the final stanza 14-11. The Lady Bucks shot 40 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Lewis, the lone returning starter for the Lady Bucks, added three assists, two steals and a blocked shot to her full stat sheet. Joining her with 17 points each were freshmen Tanisia Murphy and Dominique Fields, with each of them also adding three steals. Starasia Bell-Freeman scored seven points and hauled in nine rebounds, while Azhane Bacot scored three points with six boards.
The shooting was better against Chipola, with Motlow connecting on 52.2 percent of its shots from the field. Murphy was the leading scorer with 19 points, while Fields scored 16, Bell-Freeman 11, Lewis 10 and Bacot eight. Lewis led the rebounding effort with six and Bacot had two assists and two steals.
